When in Arugam Bay..
July 2015

It's that time of the year again - Arugam Bay Season, when surfers hit the waters and holidaymakers lounge around on the sandy beaches. A favourite destination for backpackers, Arugam Bay is most famously known as a remarkable surfing point - but it's got other alluring charms too!

The stunning view of the sunrise welcomed us as we trudged along enjoying the feeling of the soft, fine sand between our toes. A cool sea breeze kept us company as we observed a number of surfers expertly riding wave after wave. A mesmerising view, one can stand there for hours basking in the warm early morning sunlight and refreshing salty air. Chatting with a couple of friendly surfers, we learnt that the best times to catch the waves were during the early morning hours and the few hours between afternoon and sunset. It would seem that Arugam Bay is one of the best loved spots for surfers the world over!

Whisky Point in Urani, also a well known surfing spot just a short distance away from Arugam Bay, is mostly known as a beginners' spot. With relatively smaller and gentler waves, this particular point attracts eager new learners and sometimes, pro surfers who want a change of scene. Here, you can avail yourself to surfing lessons easily, making it the ultimate place to visit if you are ever interested in learning to surf!

Apart from surfing, there is much to do here! Explore the numerous different beaches that have its own unique beauty. The pristine stretch of golden sands at Komari is just in the neighbourhood and it is a great spot for a relaxing walk. What's more, there are national parks to visit and wildlife safaris to go on.

Another wonderful aspect of Arugam Bay and Whisky Point, is its diversity of cuisine as well as their amazing seafood dishes. Looking around, you will notice the number of restaurants that offer many multi cuisine options that both locals and non-Sri Lankans savour. The fresh seafood dishes, in particular have won many hearts.

The sun set and with the absence of light, the vivacity began to slowly shift away from the crashing waves, onto the shore and finally onto the streets. Arugam Bay's true spirit, it would seem, dwelled within its streets, at night.

The streets of Arugam Bay were a vision of vivid colours, shapes and patterns-quite an amazing sight. I felt as if I had stumbled upon a whimsical little fairytale town, with canopied pavilions and giant umbrellas paired with multi coloured lanterns and fairy lights. The bright, starlit night sky made a perfect backdrop to the vista. As lovestruck couples walked by idly, dynamic young groups were chattering away in excitement. Beaming around at the cheerful surroundings, one realises that the laughter and the vibrant energy are absolutely contagious!

A line of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars spans over the length of the streets. At a glance, we see surfboard shops with numerous selections of decorated surfboards, and also shop for souvenirs, clothes and beach wear, jewellery and accessories and so on. There are also places that customise T-shirts and accessories as per your request! Neon lights, fluorescent boards and multi coloured signs caught our gaze as we walked by.

Make-do lanterns are set ablaze along the roads, highlighting the entrance to several restaurants and bars. You will find cosy coffee houses with large windows, plush low chairs and the delicious aroma of freshly baked goods wafting through the air. There were even barbecue grills out on the road, with different types of seafood and people reading out specials. The people here are very friendly and will be more than happy to help you out in any way!

The streets were abuzz with chatter and music. Here, the music never stops! As one tune fades out, another takes its place, compelling the listeners to sway to the upbeat melody. A smiling mom and dad with their two little children passed by, showing us that Arugam Bay is a great spot for some family fun as well!

Head on over to Urani, Whisky Point for dinner, if you feel like a change of scenery. Its extremely laid back, so look through your dining options and enjoy true Sri Lankan hospitality!

With its natural charisma and world-class surfing point, Arugam Bay is the place to be at-family, friends or honeymooners!
