The LSR Colombo Marathon: An Yearly Run
October 2015

The route of the Colombo Marathon

A much awaited event the 15th LSR Colombo Marathon is all set to go on October 4, 2015. It is time to test your stamina and strength.

Introduced by Lanka Sportreizen (LSR) this marathon has been successfully conducted for the last several years. Today, it has gained attention globally and the LSR Colombo Marathon date is being marked on calendars around the world.

In 1998, as an attempt to incorporate sports and promote well-being, LSR launched the idea of conducting a marathon, The LSR International Marathon in Galle. Since then it has been held in Negombo, Kandy, Dambulla and Colombo and has been gaining more and more popularity with every passing year. Upon the completion of the event for five years, the name was then changed in 2006 to what we know it as today, the LSR Colombo Marathon.

Spurred by the need for providing opportunities for recreational activities in Sri Lanka and setting a goal for Sri Lanka being pegged as a destination for such sports, the objectives of the marathon are; boosting the image of Sri Lanka as a safe and secure tourist destination where people live in harmony, promote Sri Lanka as an ideal destination for recreational activities, fostering the habit of participation in similar events among the school children and the youth of the country, unearthing the talent of the Sri Lankans by providing an opportunity to run alongside international runners and finally, introducing the 'fun running' culture to the Sri Lankan society and thereby promoting the concept of a healthy society.

The fixed route starts within a close proximity of the Independence Square and is planned to proceed towards the Negombo Beach Park via Borella, DematAgoda, Peliyagoda, Wattala, around the Hamilton Canal, Pamunugama, Thalahena, Pitipana and Doowa.

The event has been identified and recognised by the AIMS/IAAF, the controlling body for Long Distance Races and Marathons and the participation at the AIMS Asia Pacific Conference held at Penang, Malaysia in July 2015 has elevated the image of the event further.

The fixed route starts within a close proximity of the Independence Square and is planned to proceed towards the Negombo Beach Park via Borella, Dematogoda, Peliyagoda, Wattala, around the Hamilton Canal, Pamunugama, Thalahena, Pitipana and Doowa. The course of the full marathon is 42.195 km and the half marathon measures up to 21.097 km.

The event has six categories consisting of 18 years and above for men and women-full marathon, 50 years and above for men and women-full marathon, 17 years and above for men and women-half marathon, 50 years and above for men and women-half marathon, 15 years and above for men, women and school children-fun run (10 km) and finally, 15 years and above for men, women and school children-fun run (5 km).

As running a marathon is a hard task and it requires constant training and strength, safety has been a priority. Participants are briefed on safety and instructed on what to do in case of an emergency. Further, medical assistance is not far off, with paramedics and ambulances trailing close to the runners.

The 15th LSR Colombo Marathon is expected to bring in over 7,500 runners while last year there was 5,500 runners including almost 200 foreign participants from over 29 countries. As always it is a well planned, organised and colourful event, which is going to be a lot of fun and is not one to be missed!

SriLankan Airlines is a partner of the LSR Colombo Marathon.
