December is the season for Negombo, when visitors from overseas arrive in Sri Lanka to enjoy the warm weather away from the wintery cold. This little beachside town close to the International Airport in Katunayake is the ideal location to experience the pleasant and relaxing atmosphere of the island.

Beach

The gentle breeze from the ocean blows across the beach as crowds gather to enjoy their evening. Families come in their numbers to play games and spend time with each other in the soft light of dusk.

Games of beach volleyball and cricket were being played by youngsters while others soaked their feet as the waves broke on the beach. Pony rides too seemed to be a popular activity, with enthusiasts trying their skill. The atmosphere was relaxing and peaceful, while the happy chatter and laughter of people could be heard in the background.

Witness catamarans sailing into the sunset, which is indeed a picturesque site. If you wish, you could also relax near traditional fishing boats that have docked on the beach at the end of the day. The sandy stretch, which is comparatively wider than in other areas, is ideal to take a slow stroll or even an energetic jog while taking pleasure in the sights and sounds around.

Tourists too enjoy the atmosphere of camaraderie where they can enjoy the beachside beauty of Negombo undisturbed. Some take photographs while others just sit and indulge in the relaxing moment.

As it begins to get dark, well-lit trolleys laden with crunchy and salty snacks gradually arrive on the beach. Various types of hot vadai such as plain vadai, prawn (isso), crab, fish as well as manioc chips and samosa are displayed and fried as you watch, attracting those coming to the beach. With spicy and crunchy flavours, the air is filled with the aromas of the mouth-watering snacks. Relish in a handful of snacks as you stroll along the town.

There are restaurants facing the road as well as the beach, but it does not matter where you wish to eat because each place provides a unique experience.

Street life

As night falls, Lewis Street and Poruthota Road that run parallel to the beach begin to teem with life and colour. Lights come on and lively music starts to flow from the many restaurants along the streets.

Tourists begin to gradually venture out from their hotels to explore and discover the many cuisines on offer. The street represent many nationalities with Sri Lankan, Italian, Swiss, German, Chinese as well as fusion cuisine, BBQ and grills and pub food, just to name a few. After a splendid dinner you could always head back to the beach along the small lanes that connect the streets with the beach.
