Strolling along the promenade that was first used as a recreational space during the British era, one can immerse in cosmopolitan Colombo and be amazed by the changing skyline. It is a favourite hangout spot and has something for everyone. Visit early morning and enjoy the cooling sea breeze while you exercise along the sea-side stretch together with other fitness enthusiasts.

Galle Face comes alive as the sun begins to set. Take a walk along the pier and witness the breathtaking sunset over the horizon of the vast ocean. As night falls, food vendors set up their stalls along the oceanfront and prepare mouthwatering snacks such as isso vadai, rotis, boiled chick peas and achcharu. Galle Face Green is a significant place, as the Independence Day celebrations are held yearly with great pride and cultural performances. The National Flag is hoisted daily and can be seen fluttering proudly in the wind.

During visits to Sri Lanka, His Holiness Pope Francis in 2015 and His Holiness Pope John Paul II in 1995 held Mass attended by thousands of devotees at the Galle Face Green.

Flying kites at Galle Face Green is a favourite past-time for kids and families. Vendors sell various designs of kites. For this reason, too, the annual kite festival is held at the ‘Green.' The weekends and public holidays are a time of high activity, and the Galle Face Green is a great place to enjoy picnics and cherish memories with loved ones. It is also a popular venue for open air musicals, carnivals and religious festivals.
