Warm pol roti is a simple meal on the go.

We love our breakfast not only because it is the first meal of the day, but in Sri Lanka, you have a great choice of food to enjoy in the morning. Whether you are in Colombo or travelling around the country, you can have a wholesome breakfast ranging from truly Sri Lankan to Western-style preparations.

The aromas of delicious spicy curries tingle your senses, and the spread of a Sri Lankan breakfast will tempt your appetite. Milk rice, a flavoursome preparation of rice cooked in thick coconut milk, is a firm favourite. It is served with a spicy mixture of onions and chilli known as lunu miris and malu ambul thiyal. Milk rice is a filling meal and is best enjoyed with a cup of tea. Try string hoppers (Iddyappam), circlets of steamed thin strings, that are served with potato curry, pol sambol, and fish or chicken curry. The flavours combine to provide a delicious and wholesome meal.

Another popular breakfast option is pittu (a steamed mixture of rice flour and shredded coconut) served with coconut milk, lunu miris and either fish or chicken curry. These combinations of curries can also be served with delicious dhal curry and bread with an omelet to top it off. While nutrition is evenly balanced, the delectable Sri Lankan flavours entice you to have more. Freshly made hot pol rotis with a dollop of butter and lunu miris, is a quick meal if you are on the go. These enjoyable preparations can be found at roadside food stalls, restaurants and also luxury hotels wherever you are in Sri Lanka.

Kola Kenda is a traditional morning drink, made using a variety of herbal plants and millets. Early in the morning after an energetic walk, a warm glass of Kola Kenda prepared in make-shift stalls will provide flavoursome herbal goodness. Boiled legumes and pulses such as chickpeas, mung beans, cowpea, and black-eyed peas are a colourful variety that encompass wholesome goodness and nourishment.

Another choice for breakfast is the various types of yams such as cassava (manioc), sweet potato (bathala), and breadfruit boiled and served with freshly grated coconut and chili hot lunu miris or pol sambol.
