Nightlife in the city of Colombo
November 2019

Cheerful conversations make for a lively evening with the World Trade Centre at the backdrop.

A city so diverse, Colombo has many facets of life among its high-rise buildings, manicured parks, and busy streets. The nights in the city are lively with music, fashion, and delicious cuisine.

The night falls all at once to the city of Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, located on the western coast. One moment, the rays of the setting sun illuminate the skies of Colombo, and the next, the sun dips into the horizon, leaving the night to unfold on the city.

Lights begin to twinkle in the high-rise apartments, malls, and hotels in the city centre, creating a beautiful sight. The night is always young in Colombo, offering its socialites the space and ambience to unwind after a long day of hustle.

Along Janadhipathi Mawatha off Galle Face, the travel is slow; busy streets are always a part of the city life. A right turn to Bank of Ceylon Mawatha will take you to the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct, the aesthetically renovated colonial building, now offering a choice of shopping and dining indulgences.

Most days, you will find a live band playing in the open courtyard at the entrance to the Dutch Hospital, near Next Innings, the popular sports lounge. The clink of glass can be heard over the chatter of voices and cheerful laughter, as friends and colleagues get together to relax under the Colombo night sky.

The inner courtyard in front of the Ministry Of Crab exudes a different ambience from that of the outer courtyard. Candles are lit on the table set-ups, casting a charming glow. The occupants relish a hearty meal provided by MOC, as conversations unfold and smiles are shared.

Whether you want a quiet and charming evening, or a lively escape with cheerful laughter resonating throughout the night, Colombo has it all.

Over in the next courtyard and outside the Dutch Hospital along Hospital Street, music coming from live bands mingle with each other, creating a harmony that becomes the perfect background for the clattering of different languages, from the visitors to the island from all over the world. Lights illuminate the cobbled street as visitors stroll along at leisure, their feet dancing to the beat. They would stop at a diner or a restaurant of their choice, and indulge in the lively atmosphere and great food.

The Park Street at Union Place is also a sought-after spot that captures the vibrancy of the night life in Colombo. Glamorous lanterns hang in neat rows, creating a delightful canopy under which the guests dine and unwind. Residents as well as guests to the island frequent the area, all of them becoming a part of the multi-cultural community that Colombo is home to.

Colombo's streets exude cheer and jollity till late hours of the night. Whether you want a quiet and charming evening, or a lively escape with cheerful laughter resonating throughout the night, Colombo has
it all.
