Abracadabra it’s Alcazaba

Purni Edwards the owner of the victorious Alcazaba receiving the SriLankan Airlines RTC Magic Million Trophy

Alcazaba gloriously won at the SriLankan Airlines RTC Magic Million, held in Nuwara Eliya Turf Club. But this time the darling of the local turf owned by Deepthika Jayakody and Purni Edwards, had to really produce magic to conjure up a hard fought victory.

Sri Lanka's National Carrier, SriLankan Airlines, could not have asked for a better way to enter the racing scene as Corporate Sponsors of the season's richest race - the SriLankan Airlines RTC Magic Million.

The Airline that brings the world to the Emerald Isle had the crowds that thronged the Racecourse on their feet as the eight-year-old Chestnut mare Alcazaba with jockey Irvan Singh fought it out against the seven-year-old bay gelding Meheran with Imran Khan in an epic battle.

After 1,800 meters on a soft track a mere neck was all that separated the pair and while Alcazaba managed to prevail, Meheran was gallant in defeat.

It was a colourful day at the Royal Turf Club as spectators enjoyed the sunshine and a six race card gave both purists and the first timer a day to remember.

The Shivantha Thambiayah Memorial Million was the other major attraction on the cards and this too was full of excitement. A ten horse field was whittled down to eight after two horses were withdrawn on veterinary grounds but the race still produced a thrilling finish, with the six-year-old Areca Wonder owned by David Anthony and jockey A Ramu led from start to finish over the 1,800 metre circuit to peg Back Charlemagne who came with raking strides but was close to the winning post.

It was a great day for the sport and the Royal Turf Club. This was followed by The Governors Cup.
